June is Rebuild Your Life Month! This is the time to reevaluate your life and decide if you are living the life you want. If things are not going as planned or you’re unhappy where you are, now is the time you can change it! Take the month of June to figure out what you want out of life and put yourself on the right track. This event was originally created as an opportunity for adults who were neglected/abused as children to discover their self-worth. But everyone can benefit by examining where they are in life from time to time…and purposely embark on a path toward where they want to be.
Whether you want to start or change a career, go back to school, take some much-needed time off, lose weight or cease a negative habit, move to a new home, or eliminate unhealthy relationships, the idea behind these desires is to create more joy in your life; yet as we all know, fear and uncertainty can keep us from taking those first steps.
When your self-esteem is low, you can rebuild self-worth by using positive affirmations, identifying, and developing your competencies, learning to accept compliments, and eliminating self-criticism while introducing self-compassion and affirming your real worth.
Other ways to rebuild your life and your self-worth include:
- Make a list: List things that are currently not working out for you or are stopping you from truly being happy. In that list, write down things that would make you happy and then you can slowly start to replace the negative things with the positive things and set your life back on the right track.
- Attend a support group: It’s completely okay to feel lost and directionless at any point in life. Just by acknowledging that you need to rebuild your life you’ve already won half the battle. Join a support group either in person or online that will help you understand why you’re feeling stuck and help you navigate through challenges while you figure yourself out.
- Read a self-help book: Many great authors out there have written motivating and encouraging books on rebuilding your life or finding your purpose. Pick up a book that resonates with you the most and you might be able to take a leaf out of their book and understand how to deal with your current plans.
- Speak with an advocate: People who experience domestic violence may perceive themselves as being at the lowest point of their self-worth. Contact an advocate at Hands of Hope Resource Center by calling 320-732-2319 for information on how to stop the abuse and start healing and rebuilding your life.
