In the United States, the entire month of April is now designated as National Volunteer Month, and it serves as a reminder that even small acts of kindness can create a ripple effect of positivity, inspiring others to join the movement of volunteerism. In 2023, Americans formally volunteered a total of 5 billion hours, with an estimated economic value of $167.2 billion, representing a significant contribution to civic life and community support.
National Volunteer Month is an annual celebration dedicated to honoring volunteering efforts around the world, recognizing and becoming people who selflessly devote their time, skills, and energy to support various causes. From aiding the less fortunate to preserving the environment, volunteers play an indispensable role in shaping a brighter future for all.
National Volunteer Month is an extension to an already-established National Volunteer Week that was first held in 1943 in Canada. The week was dedicated to paying tribute to the unwavering contributions of women during World War II who would collect supplies and help the wounded soldiers. It was in the early 20th century that organized volunteering reached its peak. Numerous groups opened to escalate humanitarian services, many of which are still active today such as the Red Cross. Presidents of the United States throughout the years have proclaimed National Volunteer Week and Month, saluting the unparalleled services of the volunteers who have given countless hours for the betterment of mankind, communities, and the American way of life. This year National Volunteer Week is April 20–26.
